The cognitive deficits of depression in the elderly are well established, but those associated with anxiety are not well characterized. Fifty-three depressed patients, 57 elderly, community-dwelling patients with anxiety disorders, and 45 elderly community-dwelling control patients were compared with respect to depression, anxiety, and cognitive functioning. The depressed elderly patients were classified as suffering from either anxiety or depression alone. Analyses indicated that both depression and anxiety impaired cognitive processing speed. However, the elderly patients with depression and anxiety differed significantly from the elderly community-dwelling patients with anxiety in that the depressed patients with anxiety were impaired on a measure of executive functioning, but the elderly community-dwelling patients with anxiety were not. The findings underscore the importance of considering the prevalence of co-occurring anxiety and depression in the elderly when investigating and treating cognitive impairments. ac619d1d87
